Created by DeSalvio Travel, Sarasota Cruise Agency, and pianist Robert Poortinga, Concerts & Cruises was designed as more than a travel event, and more than a concert. It became a way of experiencing travel through music, story, and atmosphere, bringing together Europe’s great rivers, cultural capitals, and the music they inspired.

At the heart of the evening were the great river journeys of Europe, the Rhine, the Seine, and the Danube, where the rivers shaped not only the landscape, but the cities and culture that grew beside them. Paris, Vienna, Budapest, Strasbourg, and Cologne emerged not simply as destinations, but as places shaped by movement, trade, and artistic life.

Curated by DeSalvio Travel, guests were introduced to elegant river itineraries, exclusive sailings, and thoughtfully designed journeys shaped with the care and precision of a Virtuoso-affiliated agency. Between the music came stories of the composers who travelled before us, crossing borders, rivers, and mountains in pursuit of opportunity, audiences, and artistic success. Hearing these journeys, their risks, humour, and ambition, changed how the music was heard.

The programme moved from Paris through Chopin and Debussy, eastward through Glinka and Balakirev, into the heart of Romantic Europe with Schumann and Liszt, before arriving in Vienna with Strauss. Each work became part of the itinerary, each city part of the music.
