PONANT Cruises Review by Sarasota Cruise Agency

The Reason I Stepped On Board

When I first started working with PONANT Cruises, it was their cultural voyages and expedition sailings that caught my attention. Having a cruise line that organises classical music festivals onboard is rare and with my background in the arts, I was drawn by their vision. Conversations with their team continued for months after they appeared at my Cruises & Concerts events in early 2026. We spoke in detail about ship layouts, itineraries, guest speakers, and previous voyages.

The next step was obvious. Before recommending the experience to clients, I wanted to see it for myself. Le Dumont d'Urville, one of PONANT's flagship vessels, became the perfect introduction.

A Small Ship in Valletta

Boarding Le Dumont d'Urville was memorable from the start. The ship is incredibly beautiful to look at, and with the captain personally greeting guests before they stepped onboard, the welcome felt genuine. He remained visible throughout the voyage, often crossing lounges and stopping for brief conversations with guests.

Inside, the ship felt calm and meticulously maintained. Light wood, clean lines, and open views defined the interior. Staff were spread throughout the vessel, greeting guests naturally rather than waiting behind a reception desk.

By the time I reached my cabin, my luggage had already arrived. Documents were neatly arranged on the desk, and an invitation to dine at the captain's table was waiting for me. Shortly afterwards, my steward introduced herself. A shirt I had sent for pressing returned within half an hour, allowing me to dress properly for dinner (one of the few things I haven’t figured out yet is how to prevent my shirts from wrinkling). Throughout the voyage, crew members remembered my name and handled requests quickly.

Food, Wine, and Daily Rhythm

Breakfast was relaxed and extensive, with a buffet and the possibility to order from the menu. Lunch often coincided with scenic passages or arrivals into port which changed daily and reflected PONANT's French roots. Along the Italian coast, regional pasta dishes appeared alongside notes explaining their local origins. Bread baskets were constantly replenished, with several varieties available at every meal.

One evening, a chocolate dome dessert arrived at the table for Marisa. Watching it disappear while I sat with nothing more than a coffee must have been obvious because moments later an identical dessert appeared in front of me. The attentiveness of the staff shows in particular during these situations.

The sommelier moved from table to table throughout dinner service, opening bottles and offering tastings. Wines ranged from the included selections to prestigious labels such as Château Latour to excellent complementary wines like Sancerre and other incredible grape-varieties, all carefully paired with the dishes. We have to note that PONANT’s free champagne offering results in them serving 62.000 bottles annually (2025). My dietary requirements were recorded once at the beginning of the voyage and followed carefully for the remainder of the sailing without any reminders.

The Ship Itself

Le Dumont d'Urville attracted attention everywhere it went. In Portoferraio, people along the waterfront stopped to photograph the ship as it slowly turned in the harbor.

Onboard, lounges never felt crowded. Deck spaces remained open and quiet, even during scenic sailings. My cabin was compact but intelligently designed, with everything exactly where it needed to be. At sea, I often sat on the balcony listening to the water below.

One afternoon, the captain invited three guests onto the bridge as the ship departed Elba. Fortunately, I was one of them. Navigation systems, radio traffic, and harbor maneuvers were explained while the ship slowly made its way out to sea.

Who I Believe Will Love PONANT Cruises

The strongest memories from the voyage came from the people onboard. The crew were kind, attentive, and consistently thoughtful without drawing attention to themselves.

After sailing with PONANT, I would comfortably recommend the line to travelers who enjoy culture, gastronomy, personal service, and smaller ships. Guests who prefer being treated as individuals rather than cabin numbers will find a great deal to appreciate.

If I had to choose between returning to Le Dumont d'Urville or boarding a much larger luxury vessel, the decision would be simple. I would return to PONANT.

Why Book With Sarasota Cruise Agency?

As a Virtuoso-affiliated advisor, I can offer a $100 shipboard credit on eligible PONANT sailings. Over the years I have built strong relationships with the PONANT team, and they consistently do everything they can to assist both me and my clients.

That can occasionally lead to cabin upgrades when available, additional attention onboard, and smooth handling throughout the booking process. More importantly, I know the people behind the brand and have spent time with them both ashore and at sea.
