Sarasota Cruise Agency and DeSalvio Travel Expands Its Cruise Experts with PONANT and Paul Gauguin Cruises
DeSalvio Travel is pleased to announce two new developments in our cruise portfolio: Robert Poortinga has successfully completed the specialist training required to become an official PONANT EXPLORATIONS EXPERT, and DeSalvio Travel is now an accredited partner of Paul Gauguin Cruises.
For us, these are more than additional names in a preferred-supplier portfolio. Both brands represent a style of travel that fits closely with the way we approach our clients: smaller-scale, intellectually curious, culturally rich and highly considered.
Becoming a PONANT Expert
Robert has completed PONANT's specialist training course and is now officially designated a PONANT EXPLORATIONS EXPERT. The certification gives us a deeper understanding of the company's ships, destinations, expedition philosophy and the different ways PONANT approaches exploration.
We have chosen to build a particularly strong relationship with PONANT because of the way the company presents travel. There is an intellectual dimension to its voyages that goes well beyond simply visiting remote places.
PONANT brings together exploration, scientific research, cultural discovery and expert knowledge, including collaborations with explorers and specialists. Its approach has a strong educational component, encouraging travellers to understand the places they are visiting rather than simply passing through them.
That distinction matters to us.
In the coming months, we will be publishing a series of in-depth articles about PONANT and Paul Gauguin Cruises, looking more closely at the ships, destinations, expedition style and the experiences that make these brands different. We want our clients to have enough information to understand not only where a voyage goes, but whether the way of travelling is right for them.

Why becoming cruise experts with PONANT and Paul Gauguin Cruises matters?
PONANT occupies an interesting position within luxury cruising. The French heritage is evident, but the appeal is much broader than French style alone. There is a genuine emphasis on discovery, gastronomy, culture and the natural world, with expedition voyages reaching destinations where a conventional cruise simply cannot offer the same experience.
Paul Gauguin Cruises brings a more focused proposition, with its deep connection to French Polynesia and the South Pacific. Its smaller-scale approach is particularly interesting for travellers who want to explore this part of the world without the feeling of being on a large resort ship.
Both brands appeal to travellers who are interested in why a destination matters.
That might mean understanding a region's history, learning from scientists and explorers, engaging with local culture, discovering its cuisine or simply having the time and space to experience a destination at a different pace.
There are also important connections with the worlds we already work in. PONANT's attention to classical music, gastronomy and cultural programming particularly resonates with us. These are not additional themes we have added to our travel philosophy; they are already central to the way we design meaningful travel.

A Natural Fit for DeSalvio Travel
Robert's background makes this relationship especially relevant. A professional classical pianist, he has spent much of his career working within the worlds of music, culture and the arts, alongside his work in luxury travel and gastronomy.
That combination gives us a slightly different perspective when evaluating a travel experience. We are interested in the quality of a hotel or ship, of course, but also in what happens around it: the cultural context, the people who contribute to the experience, the food, the music, the history and the intellectual substance.
This is one of the reasons PONANT stood out to us.
We are looking forward to developing this relationship over the coming months and getting to know the PONANT and Paul Gauguin Cruises products in even greater depth. For our clients, the benefit is straightforward: when we recommend a voyage, we want to understand what makes it distinctive and who will genuinely appreciate it.
