When I first became interested in PONANT, the classical music connection immediately caught my attention. As a classical pianist, I have always felt that music is an important part of cultural travel, and seeing a brand like PONANT work with world-class artists made the company particularly interesting to me. Then I started looking more closely at the ships, itineraries and overall philosophy. It became clear that this was a cruise company I could genuinely see myself recommending to our clients.
After sailing on Le Dumont-d'Urville, that impression became much stronger.
Why PONANT Feels Different
The first thing that struck me when we stepped aboard was the design. Everything was clean, refined and distinctly French without feeling formal. The French character is particularly apparent in the gastronomy and the stylish design, while the atmosphere remains comfortable and international.

The service was one of the biggest surprises for me. When we arrived, members of the crew already knew our names. The captain personally welcomed guests, and throughout the sailing there was a level of attention that felt remarkably personal.
Even small details made a difference. Shortly after arriving in our cabin, we needed some shirts ironed for dinner. We called the onboard team and within minutes someone had come to collect them. They were returned beautifully pressed shortly afterwards.
That kind of service is easy to underestimate when reading about a cruise beforehand. In practice, it means that the small logistical problems of travelling simply disappear.
PONANT's all-inclusive structure contributes to that ease. Gourmet meals, an open bar excluding premium selections, gratuities, port fees and taxes, Wi-Fi, room service and many onboard activities are included. On many voyages, excursions are included as well, while expedition itineraries include naturalist-guided outings, Zodiac landings and other expedition activities. In the polar regions, a complimentary parka is also provided on the vast majority of departures.
There are additional services, such as spa treatments, but the important distinction is that the basic experience is already a luxurious, and all inclusive one.

Food is another important part of PONANT's identity. The company works with Ducasse Conseil, bringing French culinary expertise into the onboard experience. Guests can expect à la carte dishes, buffets, freshly baked bread and pastries, afternoon teas and a selection of luxury products. For me, the French character of the company is especially apparent here.
But PONANT is not simply about what happens onboard. The destination remains central.
Its itineraries are designed around wildlife, landscapes and local cultures, supported by Expedition Teams and Guest Hosts that can include naturalists, scientists, historians, photographers, artists, researchers and other specialists. The company's partnerships and themed voyages, including those developed with Smithsonian Journeys and The Explorers Club, add another intellectual dimension to the journey.
That is one reason the classical music connection makes sense to me. PONANT has created an environment where culture, knowledge and discovery can sit naturally alongside luxury.
Who Is PONANT For?
I would describe the typical PONANT traveler as intellectually curious, financially comfortable and interested in experiencing a high level of European and French quality around the world. Age is less important than attitude. What matters is an interest in places, people, culture, nature and discovery.
It is not the cruise I would recommend to someone primarily looking for the cheapest possible fare or the largest possible selection of onboard attractions. PONANT is deliberately different from the enormous vessels built around scale and entertainment.
For us, the most important part of advising on PONANT is matching the ship and itinerary to the traveler. Some clients will be drawn to expedition travel and remote destinations. Others may be more interested in gastronomy, culture, music or simply travelling aboard a beautifully designed small ship.
What convinced me personally was the way PONANT handles the entire experience. The ship, the service, the food, the experts, the excursions and the logistics work together. Even something unexpected, such as the pod of dolphins we encountered during our sailing, can become part of the experience. The captain stopped the ship for around thirty minutes so everyone could enjoy the spectacle. You won't forget a sailing like that.
